Though transfers may not feel like taking a tour or going to an admissions meeting like they did as a high school student, that doesn’t mean they should scrap the visit entirely. A number of colleges now have freshman open houses that include special sections for transfer students. Others hold separate Transfer Open Houses or Transfer Days that allow potential transfers to immerse themselves in all the school has to offer.

Seeing a college in “real life” can give potential transfers an entirely different mental picture of the school than the one gained by reviewing the college’s website. Additionally, many of the questions potential transfers have are better answered informally and in person, either by students currently enrolled in the program of study the transfer is considering, by professors or a department head within their major, or by an admissions or transfer counselor.

Students are also quite resourceful when it comes to arranging overnight or day visits with people they know who currently attend a college they’re considering transferring to instead of going through the college’s admissions office. Marjorie, whose son transferred when his major was eliminated at his first university, is a big fan of this type of college visit.

“It’s very important to visit the school you’re considering transferring to and to talk to the students and professors there informally instead of just relying on the organized tours. My son actually spent the day there with a friend from his summer music camp who was also majoring in engineering. That gave him a really good feel for the school.”
